Range and oven repair in James Island for every burner and bake

Half the kitchens on James Island cook on gas, half on electric, and the salt air off the harbor is hard on both. An igniter that clicks all evening, an oven that takes forty minutes to reach 350, a glass top with one cold zone. Fifteen minutes from the shop, a James Island range technician meters the part, writes one price, and fixes it that visit more often than not.

Kitchens on James Island, and what cooks in them

James Island kitchens run the whole range of ranges. The ranches in Riverland Terrace, along Camp Rd and around Fort Johnson mostly have a thirty-inch freestanding unit in the original spot, electric coil or glass top, some converted to propane or natural gas over the years. The raised newer houses near James Island County Park and off Folly Rd went in with slide-in gas ranges and separate wall ovens. And the waterfront kitchens on Stiles Point and the Harbor View bluffs have the pro-style stuff: Wolf, Thermador and Viking ranges with six burners and a griddle, or a KitchenAid or Bosch double wall oven built into cabinetry that does not come apart easily.

Salt air from the harbor is what sets James Island range repair apart from West Ashley. Gas igniters are a ceramic element with a fine wire; the spark modules and flame sensors around them have contacts. Humid, faintly salty air pits those contacts, and a burner that lit fine on Sunday clicks and clicks on Tuesday. Oven igniters weaken the same way, glowing but never pulling enough current to open the gas valve, so the oven heats late or not at all. On electric units the same air corrodes the terminal block at the back and the element connections, which is where a bake element that reads fine can still fail to heat.

What the range or oven symptom usually means

Gas burner clicks but will not light

Wet or corroded spark electrode, a cracked igniter, or a spark module that has lost a channel. Sometimes it is just a boiled-over pot that flooded the burner base. We dry and clean first, then test the module and electrode. Salt air on the harbor side makes this the most common James Island range call.

Oven will not heat or heats very slowly

On gas, a weak oven igniter that glows but does not draw enough amperage to open the valve. On electric, a bake element with a break in it or a failed relay on the control board. We put the meter on the igniter or element in minutes and tell you which one you are buying.

Oven temperature is off or uneven

A drifting temperature sensor, a control board that no longer reads it correctly, or a convection fan that has stopped. We check the sensor's resistance against temperature and watch a full preheat. A door gasket that has gone flat in the humidity will also leave one side of the pan pale.

Glass cooktop zone dead or stuck on high

A radiant element that has opened, a failed surface switch, or a cracked glass top that has let the element short. We test each element and switch with the meter. A cooktop that will not turn off is a safety call and gets moved up the day.

Error code or dead control panel

Surges during hurricane season take out oven control boards and touch panels across James Island. We read the code, test the board's inputs and outputs, and confirm the board is the problem before it is ordered, because a bad sensor can throw a code that looks like a board fault.

Gas smell around the range

Shut the gas valve behind the range and call. It may be a burner left partly open, a failed valve on the manifold, a loose fitting behind the unit, or a regulator issue. We leak-test the connections and the manifold with the proper tools, not a match, and clear the range for use only when it is tight.

The procedure

  • Every burner and the oven run through a full cycle first
  • Meter on igniters, elements, sensors, switches, modules and boards
  • One written price with the $99 diagnostic already inside it
  • Van stocked for igniters, elements, sensors and spark modules
  • Gas connections leak-tested before we leave, written warranty in hand

How range and oven repair on James Island works

The technician cooks with your range before touching a tool: each burner lit, the oven set to preheat, the convection fan listened for. Then the meter comes out. A gas oven igniter is tested for amperage draw, not just whether it glows. An electric element is checked for resistance and for shorts to ground. Sensors are read against a known temperature. That is what the $99 diagnostic buys on James Island, a measured cause rather than a guess from the symptom you described on the phone. One written number follows. Approve it and the $99 is inside that number. Decline and $99 is the whole bill.

We service GE, Whirlpool, Frigidaire, Samsung, LG, KitchenAid, Bosch, Maytag and Kenmore ranges and wall ovens across James Island, along with the Wolf, Thermador, Viking and JennAir pro-style units in the waterfront kitchens on Stiles Point and Harbor View. Rental houses toward Folly get scheduled around turnovers so guests can cook the night they arrive. The van carries igniters, bake and broil elements, sensors, spark modules and surface switches for the common models, which is why most range repairs on the island finish the same visit. Book online and up to $20 comes off the repair, not the diagnostic. Every job carries a written warranty.

Straight questions · James Island

A burner on my James Island gas range keeps clicking. Dangerous?
Usually not dangerous, but annoying and worth fixing. Constant clicking means the spark module is firing and one electrode is shorted or wet. Turn the burner knobs fully off and, if the clicking continues, unplug the range or flip its breaker until we arrive. We clean and test the electrodes and module and replace the one that reads wrong.
Do you repair Wolf, Thermador and Viking ranges on James Island?
Yes. The pro-style ranges and built-in wall ovens in the newer waterfront houses on Stiles Point, Harbor View and around Fort Johnson are regular work, along with Sub-Zero and Miele in the same kitchens. Tell us the model when you book so the technician arrives with the right igniters and sensors for it.
My electric oven is slow to preheat. Is that the element?
Often, but not always. A bake element with a hairline break will glow partway and heat slowly. A worn temperature sensor or a door gasket that no longer seals in the humidity can do the same thing. We test the element's resistance and the sensor, and replace the one that is actually out of range.
Will you work on a range in a rental near Folly Beach?
Yes. Many of the raised rental houses along the Folly end of Folly Rd have gas ranges that guests use hard. We schedule between check-out and check-in when we can, carry the common igniters and elements on the van, and text the arrival window so a property manager does not have to wait on site.
Is the $99 charged if the range turns out to be fine?
If the technician comes out, runs and tests the range, the $99 diagnostic is the charge, whether the fix is a part or a plain answer. If you approve a repair, that $99 is inside the repair price. If the answer is that the range is not worth repairing, $99 is your whole bill and you know where you stand.
