Ask any technician in the Lowcountry what kills dryers and the answer is the air. Humidity turns loose lint into a felt that packs the blower housing, the lint chute and the vent, and a dryer breathing through felt runs hot, trips its thermal fuse and quits. That is why every dryer visit from our shop includes a look at the vent run, not just the machine. In the raised houses of James Island and the crawlspace ranches of West Ashley and Park Circle, that run can be twenty-five feet of foil flex under the floor. On the peninsula it is often a stacked unit venting into a wall chase that has never been cleaned.
A typical call: a Mount Pleasant homeowner in Park West books online for a dryer that “takes two cycles.” The van comes over the Ravenel Bridge the next morning. The heating element reads fine on the meter, but the airflow at the exhaust is a whisper. The vent has a crushed section behind the machine and a bird guard packed solid at the outside wall. Electric dryers: a burned heating element, a blown thermal fuse or a failed high-limit thermostat. Gas dryers: an igniter that glows but never opens the valve, or a flame sensor that gave up. We meter each one in sequence rather than swapping parts by guess, then confirm the vent is not what tripped the fuse.
Almost always airflow. Lint felt in the blower housing, a kinked or crushed vent, or a screen outside the house that has clogged. Sometimes a moisture sensor coated with dryer-sheet film that reads “dry” too early or too late. We measure exhaust flow, clear what we can reach, and tell you if the run needs a vent contractor.
Drum rollers, the idler pulley and the rear bearing wear faster in damp rooms. A thump on every turn is a flat spot on a roller or a lifted drum seam; a squeal is usually the idler. We open the cabinet, spin the drum by hand and replace the wear set together so you are not back in six months.
Stop using it until we have looked. Usually lint has reached the heating element or the gas burner tube. We pull the drum, vacuum the cabinet, inspect the element or burner assembly and the wiring insulation, and check the vent. If the element is sagging and shorting to the housing, it gets replaced.
A door switch that reads closed to your eye and open to the board, a snapped belt, a seized motor or a dead start relay. Salt air near Folly and Sullivan’s corrodes door switch contacts in particular. We check the switch and the belt first because they are quick and common, then the motor windings.
Overheating tripping the cycling thermostat, a failing motor drawing too much current, or a control board that lost its timing after a storm surge. We run the dryer with a thermometer at the exhaust and an ammeter on the motor and read what actually happens, instead of assuming.
The technician plugs in a clamp meter and a thermometer before touching a wrench. On an electric dryer that means confirming 240 volts at the outlet, then reading the element, thermal fuse, cycling and high-limit thermostats and the moisture sensor. On gas, it means watching the igniter glow, timing the valve coils, and checking the flame sensor. Then the exhaust: airflow at the outlet, back pressure, the state of the run behind the machine and, where we can see it, under the house. Only after that does a repair price go on paper.
