A drain pump that has failed or is jammed with a glass shard or fruit pit, a clogged filter, a blocked air gap, or a drain hose kinked behind the cabinet. We check the hose and air gap first because they are fast, then meter the pump. A pump that hums but does not move water is jammed, not dead.
Low water temperature, a wash pump losing pressure, a spray arm clogged with debris, or a detergent dispenser that never opened. In Charleston city water, film is rarely mineral scale; it is usually a weak wash. We check fill volume, pump pressure and the heater, and clear the spray arms and filter.

A door latch whose switch no longer registers closed, a control board that lost its program during a surge, a thermal fuse, or a child-lock left on. We test the latch switch with a meter, because a latch that clicks can still fail electrically, and check the board’s inputs before replacing it.
An inlet valve that has failed or is clogged at the screen, a float switch stuck up, or a supply valve under the sink that got bumped closed. Homes on well water on Johns Island, Wadmalaw and near Ravenel do see scale on the valve screen; inside the city it is usually the valve coil itself.
Something hard in the wash pump: a broken glass, a bone, a pit. Occasionally a failed pump bearing or a spray arm hitting a tall pan. We pull the lower arm and pump cover, clear the debris and check the impeller for damage. If the bearing has gone, you get a written number for the pump.
