Charleston cooks, and Charleston kitchens run the whole spectrum. What fails here has a local flavor. Salt air corrodes the spark modules and igniter leads on gas ranges within a mile or two of the harbor and the beaches, so a cooktop in Sullivan’s Island or Folly Beach clicks without a spark long before an inland one would. Humidity works its way into oven door switches and touch panels. And hurricane-season surges take out electronic oven controls, which then display a code or nothing at all. On the peninsula, the older gas lines in historic houses mean we check the connection at the wall as part of every gas range visit.
Either the spark module is firing but the electrode is wet or corroded, or the module has failed. Boil-over residue in the burner cap does it too. We clean and test the electrode, check the module output with a meter, and replace what has failed. Near the water the electrode leads corrode first.
The oven igniter is weakening. It glows but does not draw enough current to open the gas safety valve, so the oven waits, or lights late. We measure the igniter’s amperage against spec, which tells us in a minute whether it is the igniter or the valve, and replace the right one.
A bake element with a break, a temperature sensor drifting out of range, or a control board mis-reading the sensor. We check the element for continuity and hot spots, read the sensor’s resistance at room temperature, and confirm what the board is doing. Cakes that brown on one side only usually point to a failed element.
A burned surface element, a failed infinite switch, or on a glass-top, a cracked element or a bad relay on the control board. A burner stuck on high is a switch that has welded closed and needs replacing now. We meter the element and the switch and swap the failed one on the spot.
Self-clean cycles wear out the door lock motor and its switch, and a lock stuck closed after a cycle is common on older ranges. We release the door, test the lock assembly and the thermostat that controls it, and replace the motor or switch. We also talk you out of self-clean on a range that is not built for it.
Power first: the outlet, the cord, the fuse on the board. Then the electronic oven control itself, which is the usual casualty of a storm surge. Most codes point at the sensor or the lock circuit, so we test those before condemning a board. If the board is gone, we tell you what it costs to fix in writing.
The technician starts with the appliance’s own evidence: the error code if there is one, the sound of the igniter, the color of the element. Then the meter comes out. On a gas range that means igniter amperage, spark module output, valve coil resistance and a leak check at the connection. On an electric range it means element continuity, infinite switch operation, sensor resistance and voltage at the terminal block. On a wall oven or a pro-style range the same list applies, with the extra step of confirming the convection fan and any secondary elements. That work is the $99 diagnostic. The written repair price that follows already has that $99 inside it.
