Appliance repair on the Charleston peninsula

Fifteen minutes over the Ashley River puts the van on Calhoun Street. From there it is a stacked washer in a Harleston Village closet, a Sub-Zero South of Broad, a dryer in a King Street rental with guests due at four. Six machines, one written number, the repair usually finished the same visit. Parking is our problem, not yours.

Territory

Working the peninsula

The route downtown is short and the last hundred yards are the hard part. US-17 over the Ashley, off at Lockwood Drive or Calhoun, then the search for a legal space within carrying distance of the house. South of Broad and Harleston Village mean residential permit streets and a walk through a piazza gate; Cannonborough-Elliotborough, Radcliffeborough and the blocks off King Street mean loading zones and lockboxes; Wagener Terrace and Hampton Park, up by the Citadel, are the one part of the peninsula with driveways. We plan the stop before we leave the shop, carry the tool bag and the likely parts in one trip, and never block a neighbor. Six days a week, Monday to Saturday, and same-day for a warm refrigerator.

Downtown houses were built long before the appliances in them, and that shapes every call. Laundry is a stacked pair in a closet or on an upper floor with original plaster below, so a leak is a ceiling problem within hours. Kitchens run to built-in and panel-front Sub-Zero, Thermador, Miele and Wolf in the renovated houses and to builder-grade slide-ins in the rentals near the College. Salt air off the harbor pits igniter electrodes, door switches and latch contacts. Ground-floor kitchens on the low streets take on water in a king tide, and hurricane-season outages send surges through control boards and inverter compressors. A large share of the refrigerators and dryers on the peninsula are in short-term rentals, managed from an office and serviced between guests.

What Downtown Charleston calls about

ApplianceWhat we see most here
RefrigeratorsBuilt-in Sub-Zero and Thermador with dirty top condensers and failed evaporator fans; surge-damaged boards after summer outages; French doors iced up behind the back panel in rental kitchens.
DryersStacked units in closets venting through old walls to a piazza hood, packed with felted lint; ventless and heat-pump compacts in King Street condos with full condensate tanks; salt-corroded gas igniters and door switches.
WashersDrain pumps eating hair ties and coins in stacked pairs; door boots and drain hoses leaking onto heart pine and through to the room below; compact Bosch and Miele front-loaders with lock and board faults.
DishwashersPanel-front Bosch, Miele and KitchenAid that will not drain or will not register the door; film on glasses that is detergent etching in soft Charleston water, not scale; slow gasket leaks under old floors.
Ranges & ovensPro-style Wolf, Viking and Thermador gas ranges with corroded spark electrodes clicking all night; weak oven igniters opening the valve late; 1960s and 70s wall ovens in Wagener Terrace kitchens with tired elements and sensors.
Ice makersEmpty bins discovered by cleaners on turnover day; frozen fill tubes from seeping valves; Sub-Zero freezer-drawer modules starved by long, pinched supply lines behind built-ins.
Dryer

Dryer · Harleston Village

A stacked pair in a hall closet, door off its hinges to get the unit onto sliders. Element fine. The vent ran through two walls to a hood under the piazza and moved almost no air. We cleared what we could reach, replaced the thermal fuse the restriction had blown, and wrote down what the rest of the run needed.

Fridge

Fridge · South of Broad

Storm the night before, power back at two in the morning, Sub-Zero reading 54 by breakfast and clicking. Same-day window. Compressor windings metered good, so the fault was the inverter board the surge had taken. Board off the van, panels and hinges reset, cold by the time the owner got home.

Washer

Washer · Cannonborough-Elliotborough

Turnover day for a two-unit rental, cleaner reports the upstairs washer will not drain and there is a stain on the ceiling below. Drain hose split at the bend, only leaking during pump-out. Written number texted to the manager, approved in four minutes, hose replaced and drain cycle run clean before check-in.

Downtown Charleston questions

Is there a downtown or parking surcharge for Downtown Charleston?
No. The peninsula is inside our 35-minute area like the other fifteen cities and the visit costs the same as it does in West Ashley. Parking, permit streets and piazza gates are ours to sort out. The $99 diagnostic is inside the written repair number you approve, and if you decline, $99 is the whole bill.
Do you service built-in and panel-front appliances in Downtown Charleston kitchens?
Yes. Sub-Zero, Thermador, Wolf, Viking, Miele and JennAir refrigerators, ranges, wall ovens and dishwashers are designed for front and top service and are repaired in place; custom panels come off and go back on the same brackets, aligned to the cabinets. Some parts for these lines have to be ordered, and that return visit carries no second trip fee.
How do you handle short-term rentals and property managers on the peninsula?
We book the window between check-out and check-in, use the lockbox or gate code you give us and send the written number by text with a photo for approval. The repair is finished before the next guests arrive, and the address keeps its access and parking notes so the second call is faster. Book online and up to $20 comes off the repair.
How fast can you get to a warm refrigerator downtown?
Call in the morning and there is usually a same-day window. Downtown is fifteen minutes from the shop and a warm refrigerator goes ahead of everything else on the board. Everything else, washers, dryers, ranges, dishwashers and ice makers, is scheduled the same week and often the next day. We work Monday to Saturday.
