Two cycles for one load of beach towels. A drum that thumps like a loose trailer hitch. Warm air with no heat behind it, or a hot metallic smell that makes you unplug the thing. A James Island dryer technician is fifteen minutes away over the Wappoo Cut, gas or electric, with the meter, the vent gauge and the parts that fix most of it on the first trip.
Same $99 diagnostic, same written quote, same written warranty on every machine we fix in James Island.
Look under a raised house on Harbor View Rd or one of the newer builds off Folly Rd near James Island County Park and you will usually find the dryer vent: twenty or thirty feet of flexible duct running through the crawlspace, sagging between the joists, ending at a flap that faces the marsh. Lowcountry humidity turns the lint in that run into damp felt. The dryer pushes against it, cycles longer, and the thermal fuse or the high-limit thermostat eventually opens. Ranches in Riverland Terrace and around Camp Rd have shorter vents but older ones, often the foil kind that crushes flat behind the machine.

Gas dryers are common on the island and salt air is hard on them. The igniter glows, the flame sensor reads it, the gas valve coils open: three parts, each with a coil or a contact the harbor air can pit. On Stiles Point and Fort Johnson we replace more igniters and flame sensors per household than anywhere inland. Electric dryers fail differently here: a heating element that breaks its coil after years of long, hot cycles against a slow vent, or a terminal block scorched where the cord was never tightened. Both show up as a drum that spins and blows cool.
Electric: the heating element, thermal fuse or high-limit thermostat, all checked with the meter in a few minutes. Gas: the igniter, flame sensor or gas valve coils. The fuse and thermostat often open because the vent is choked, so we check that too or the new part fails again by Thanksgiving.
Almost always airflow. A vent packed with damp felt under a raised house, a crushed foil hose behind the machine, or a lint screen housing full of fabric softener film. We measure back-pressure at the machine, clear what we can reach, and tell you if the run under the house needs a proper cleaning.
Drum rollers, the idler pulley, glides or a rear bearing. Humidity rusts the roller shafts and the squeal starts on the first cold morning. We open the cabinet, spin each roller by hand, and replace the worn ones as a set so you are not calling back in six months for the next one.
Stop using it and call. Lint built up around the heater housing or burner tube, a heating element sagging against the housing, or a cycling thermostat stuck closed so the dryer overheats. We clear the cabinet, test the thermostats and element, and check the vent before the dryer runs again.
A door switch that no longer clicks, a blown thermal fuse, a failed start switch or a belt that snapped and tripped the belt switch. On front-facing utility rooms in older Riverland Terrace ranches the door switch takes the most abuse. Each one tests in seconds with the meter.
On a gas dryer the igniter may glow but the gas valve coils fail to hold open, or the flame sensor has gone soft from years of salt air. We test the coils for resistance and the sensor for continuity, replace what reads wrong, and confirm the flame cycles properly before we leave.
The technician starts the dryer and listens, then unplugs it or shuts the gas and opens the cabinet. A meter goes on the thermal fuse, the thermostats and the element or the igniter and coils, in order, until the failed part reads open or out of range. Then the airflow test: back-pressure at the exhaust, a look at the vent route, a check that the flap outside actually opens. That is what the $99 diagnostic buys, a measured cause rather than a guess from the symptom. You get one number in writing. Approve it and the $99 is inside that number. Decline and $99 is the whole bill.
Whirlpool, Maytag, GE, Samsung, LG, Frigidaire, Kenmore, Electrolux and Bosch dryers all run through James Island, including the stacked laundry centers in the raised rental houses toward Folly Beach. Turnover-day calls get scheduled between check-out and check-in so the next guests find a working dryer. The van carries the elements, igniters, fuses, rollers and belts that cover most James Island dryer calls, so the repair usually finishes the same visit; a part that has to be ordered means a return trip with no second trip fee. Book online and up to $20 comes off the repair, never off the $99 diagnostic. Every repair leaves with a written warranty.
Call (843) 969-4664 with the symptom, or book online and up to $20 comes off the repair. James Island, six days a week.
