Two kinds of dryer live in Mount Pleasant. In the Old Village, Snee Farm and the streets off Coleman Blvd there are dryers on the ground floor of older houses, some raised on piers, venting sideways through a crawlspace wall and into whatever the landscaper planted in front of it. In Park West, Dunes West, Carolina Park and the newer sections of I’On the dryer is upstairs, the vent runs twenty or thirty feet through framing, and the termination is a roof cap most owners have never seen. Either way we come over the Ravenel Bridge from West Ashley, about 25 minutes, and the vent gets checked on every call because here it is part of the dryer.
Charleston humidity is what turns lint into a problem. Dry lint blows through a duct. Damp lint sticks, layers, and packs into a gray felt that a leaf blower will not move. On a long roof-vented run in a Carolina Park house the dryer is pushing against that felt from the first year. The element or the gas valve coils run longer and hotter, the thermal fuse trips, and the homeowner calls about no heat. Replacing the fuse without clearing the duct gets you about a month. So we measure back pressure at the dryer, tell you what the vent is doing, and quote the repair with that in mind.
On an electric dryer, a burned heating element or a tripped thermal fuse. On gas, a weak igniter or failed flame sensor. We meter the element, the fuse and the thermostats, check the igniter glow and gas valve coils, and check the vent that usually caused the fuse to trip in the first place.
Almost always airflow. A packed vent, a crushed flex hose behind the machine, a blocked roof cap, or a lint screen housing full of felt. Sometimes a weak element that still reads warm. We measure back pressure and temperature at the exhaust and tell you which it is before quoting a part.
Worn drum rollers, a dry idler pulley, a cracked drum glide or a belt about to go. Humidity rusts roller shafts here faster than inland. We spin the drum by hand, listen with the belt off, and replace what is worn while the cabinet is open.
A thermal cutoff opening because the vent is restricted, a moisture sensor coated in dryer sheet residue calling the load dry, or a failing motor that overheats and cuts out. We run it with a meter on the motor and thermostats and watch what opens first.
Lint that migrated inside the cabinet and is sitting on the element or burner tube. We stop the dryer, open the cabinet, clear it, then check why the lint got past the screen and whether the vent is pushing air back into the housing.
The igniter glows but the gas valve coils have weakened and will not hold open, so the flame lights and drops out. Common on gas dryers in Park West and Dunes West at eight to twelve years. We test the coils under load and replace them from van stock.
We start at the wall. An electric dryer needs both legs of 240 volts, and a breaker that has lost one leg makes a dryer that tumbles cold; we have driven to Dunes West for a dryer that only needed the panel reset. Then the meter goes on the element, the thermal fuse, the cycling thermostat and the high-limit, in that order, and on a gas unit we watch the igniter and time the flame. While the cabinet is open we check the drum rollers and belt so nothing surprises you in three months. Last, the airflow reading at the exhaust. If the vent is the real fault, we say so in writing and you decide what to do with that.
Whirlpool, Maytag, GE, Samsung, LG, Frigidaire, Kenmore and Electrolux dryers are the daily work in Mount Pleasant, along with the compact stacked units in Snee Farm and Old Village townhomes and the occasional Bosch or Miele condensing dryer in a laundry room with no outside vent.
