What fails in West Ashley is less about salt than in Folly or Sullivan’s, and more about heat, humidity and the power grid. Hurricane-season surges and the flicker of a restored line are hard on electronic oven controls, and a dark display in September is a common call. Humidity gets into oven door lock switches and membrane touch panels. Gas oven igniters weaken with age until they glow but cannot open the valve, so the oven lights late or not at all. On electric ranges the bake element and the temperature sensor account for most cold-oven complaints, and both are quick to meter and quick to replace.
The igniter is drawing too little current to open the safety valve. We clamp a meter on it and read the amperage against spec, which settles igniter versus valve in a minute. The igniter is stocked for the common GE, Whirlpool, Frigidaire and Samsung ranges in West Ashley, so the oven usually lights before we leave.
Either the temperature sensor has drifted or the bake element has a partial break, and a cold spot. We read the sensor’s resistance, check the element for continuity, and verify the board’s reading against a probe thermometer. If the oven is close, a calibration offset may be all it needs, and we say so.
A wet or corroded electrode, a spark module that has failed, or boil-over residue in the burner cap. In West Ashley the electrode is the usual culprit, not the module. We clean and test each electrode, check the module output, and replace what has actually failed rather than the whole assembly.

The lock motor or its switch has failed, or the thermostat that releases the lock is stuck. We release the door, test the lock assembly, and replace the motor or switch. Self-clean is hard on older ranges in Byrnes Downs and Ashley Hall, and we will tell you when to skip it.
The technician lets the range tell its story first: the code on the display, the sound of the spark, the color of the element at full heat. Then the meter. On gas, igniter amperage, spark module output, valve coil resistance and a leak test at the flex connector. On electric, element continuity, infinite switch action, sensor resistance and voltage at the terminal block. Wall ovens add the convection fan and the lock circuit; pro-style ranges add more burners and a second oven but the same tests. That is the $99 diagnostic. The repair price that follows is one written number with the $99 already inside it; decline and $99 is the whole bill.
